The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative Provides Hurricane Aid to Proyecto Matria
The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative provided financial grant to Proyecto Matria in their effort to aid those members of Puerto Rico's LGBTQ community ravaged by Hurricane Maria. With SIGBI funds and support from other charitable organizations, Proyecto Matria has been able to provide much needed food, water and supplies to hundreds of families throughout some of the worst hit areas of the island.
Proyecto Matria is a multi-faceted non-profit organization that serves Puerto Rico's survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault many of whom serve as family heads living below the poverty level. Matria also serves Puerto Rico's LGBTQ community through safe housing and economic opportunity programs. They also provide educational programming to train other organizations, public agencies and community organizations on methods to stop discrimination against LGBTQ citizens. They are co-founders of the Broad Committee for the Search for Equity (CABE) that monitors public and private actions that undermine the rights of LGBTQ people while promoting the advancement of LGBTQ human rights on the island.
