The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI) is the official charitable giving organization of the historic Stonewall Inn, the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and the center piece of one of the United States’ newest national monuments. SIGBI carries forward the legacy of The Stonewall Inn by supporting LGBTQ+ communities, fostering inclusivity, and driving progress in the fight for equality worldwide.

SIGBI’s Mission

We are a non-profit charitable organization inspired by the struggles and ideals of the LGBTQ+ rights movement born from the Stonewall Inn Uprising of 1969. We are committed to eliminating the social intolerance that is profoundly impacting the lives of LGBTQ+ citizens throughout America and the world.

Through our safe spaces initiative, awareness campaigns, educational programming, fundraising, and candid public dialogue, we support grassroots organizations scattered across the globe, especially in communities where progress toward equality has been slow. We believe that the negative impact of ongoing discrimination and harassment can no longer be tolerated, and we work tirelessly toward building a more inclusive and just world.

How The Modern LGBTQ+ Rights Movement Began

In June of 1969, the patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a little bar in New York City's Greenwich Village, finally stood up in defiance against a regimen of harassment openly administered by the New York City Police Department. The events that followed that night and the days thereafter would send waves of profound social and legal change rippling around the world for years to come.

More than fifty five years after that historic night, it is difficult to predict when the fight for LGBTQ equality will finally be won, but it can be said with certainty that the day will come and that The Stonewall Inn will forever be, "The Place Where Pride Began."
